One of Africa's finest music festivals in one of Morocco's most beautiful cities. Essaouira, a whitewashed Atlantic port with Portuguese ramparts and a Jimi Hendrix mythology, hosts four days of Gnaoua music — ancient sub-Saharan trance music brought to Morocco by enslaved people and now a living spiritual tradition. The festival pairs Gnaoua masters with international jazz, world music, and fusion artists. Concerts happen in the medieval square, on the ramparts overlooking the ocean, and in the medina streets. Entry to most events is free.
Most concerts are free. The Jemaa Lakhsba square shows are the main events — arrive early for a good spot. Marrakech (RAK) is the nearest hub — 2.5 hours by road. Book Essaouira riad accommodation months ahead.
