✈️ Thaipusam

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia · January 28–29

One of the most extraordinary religious festivals in the world. Tamil Hindu devotees carry kavadi — elaborate metal structures pierced through their skin as acts of devotion — in a procession from Sri Mahamariamman Temple in central KL to the Batu Caves, 15km away. The Batu Caves themselves, a series of Hindu temples inside limestone caverns reached by 272 rainbow-coloured steps, form the dramatic finale. Over a million people participate or witness the procession. The devotees, in trance states, are believed to feel no pain. It is simultaneously terrifying and deeply moving.
