✈️ Viennese Ball Season

Vienna, Austria · January 15–28

Vienna's ball season is a 300-year-old tradition that reaches its peak between January and Shrove Tuesday. Over 400 balls take place across the city — from the grand Opera Ball at the Staatsoper (one of the most famous events in European social life) to the Coffeehouse Owners' Ball, the Pharmacists' Ball, and dozens of guild and professional balls. The format is consistent: formal dress, a midnight quadrille, and dancing until dawn. The Opera Ball is the pinnacle — held in the Staatsoper with the floor planked over and loges full of international guests.

Local Knowledge

The Opera Ball tickets require planning years in advance for loges; standing floor tickets are more accessible and still extraordinary. The Pharmacists' Ball and similar guild balls are a more local experience. White tie for men at the Opera Ball is strictly observed.
